Lieutenant Colonel Richard D. Kingsberry was born 31 May 1954 in the Hayesville
Township, Franklin County,
North Carolina to the late Mr. Javous G. Kingsberry and Mrs. Bern ice D. Kingsberry.
ColonelKingsberry attended and graduated from B.F. Person Albion and Franklinton
High School, Franklinton, North Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree
in History and Political ience from Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville,
North Carolina and his Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He entered Military Service right
out of high school as he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served in Aviation
Maintenance Administration from September 1972 to July 1975. While serving in the
Navy he made two Western Pacific Cruises to Vietnam and one Mediterranean Cruise.
Upon completion of his service in the Navy he returned to North Carolina where he
enrolled in college full time and joined the North Carolina Army National Guard.
In June 1981 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers
after completing Officer Candidate School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Colonel Kingsberry
has completed the Engineer Officer Basic Course, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, the Ordnance
Officer Advance Course, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, Command and General Staff
Officer College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, the Defense Equal Opportunity Management
School, Patrick Air Force Base, Florida and the School of Cadet Command Cadre and
Pre Command Course, Fort Monroe, Virginia. He has served in various leadership positions
from Platoon Leader to Battalion Commander. From May 2000 to February 2004 Colonel
Kingsberry served as the Professor of Military Science at the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte, a first for an African American Officer in the North Carolina
National Guard. His many awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation
Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, the
Humanitarian Service Medal and he is the recipient of the 2000 NAACP Roy Wilkins
Service Award. Colonel Kingsberry is the founding president of the 9th and 10th (HORSE)
Cavalry Association of “The Buffalo Soldiers” Greater North Carolina Chapter (1995)
and the National Association for Black Veterans North Carolina State Command Council
He is married to the former Gloria Blacknall and they have two daughters, (Benetta
& Stacy) and one son (Grasan).
